Ralph Herzka
Meridian's founder and rainmaker-in-chief, still in the mix after the agency bans
Who they are
Ralph Herzka founded Meridian Capital Group and built it into the mid-market debt brokerage of its day. Its mantra was 'We keep closing.' His annual party at the Mortgage Bankers Association conference drew the densest crowd of lenders and brokers in the business, and The Promote says speakers made a point of kissing the ring. The newsletter describes him as an ultra-aggressive dealmaker and a heated adversary, but also a man with a sense of humor. His power came from relationships. Through ties to New York Community Bank's top lenders, Meridian came to refer about 75% of NYCB's NY-NJ-PA multifamily business. Ruby Schron has used him for decades, going back to the 2003 purchase of the Trump family's outer-borough apartment portfolio. Herzka also co-founded DUS lender Beech Street Capital.
Things turned in late 2023. Freddie Mac began investigating Meridian over what The Promote described as an allegedly problematic deal, and Fannie Mae formally stopped accepting Meridian-brokered loans in March 2024. Herzka handed the chairman and CEO titles to former acting Comptroller of the Currency Brian Brooks and became 'senior chairman,' though he remained the firm's key relationship holder. Heir apparent Yoni Goodman left, and so did a wave of rainmakers. Two of them, healthcare brokers Ari Adlerstein and Josh Simpson, were fired for cause and later alleged in a lawsuit that a permissive culture started at the top. Meridian called that suit entirely without merit.
Herzka has kept projecting staying power. 'You're defined by an overall picture, not by one event,' he told a ReDeal crowd in 2024. In 2025 he sat onstage with Schron, who praised him, and Meridian's Freddie comeback deal was a $173M refi for Schron. The NewPoint lending platform he co-invested in sold for $425M. He remains Bike4Chai's top fundraiser, at more than $11M since 2012, though his totals have fallen sharply since 2024.
