Adam Spies
Harmon's Batman partner, a trophy seller increasingly billed on debt deals
Who they are
Adam Spies is the other half of Batman & Batman™️, the Newmark investment-sales duo he forms with Doug Harmon. The pair go back to Eastdil, where they brokered Principal's purchase of 1370 Sixth Ave nearly two decades ago. They then made the 2016 jump to Cushman & Wakefield, which The Promote still ranks among the defining broker poaches of the era, before Barry Gosin and Howard Lutnick lured them to Newmark. Spies's name has become shorthand for the top of the trade. The podcast has joked that "Adam Spies ain't cheap" and that he isn't getting out of bed for a $40M deal, and one episode asked who the "Roy Marches and Adam Spies" of the private-jet world might be.
Recent work shows the range. Spies and Harmon sold 800 Fifth from the Winter and Spitzer families to Miki Naftali, and they handled 1370 Sixth for a second time when Principal sold it to Barings at a steep loss. The Promote credits Gosin and Lutnick's habit of personally poaching names like Spies, with promises of juice, for helping Newmark land the Signature Bank loan-book assignment.
What sets Spies apart lately is the debt side. The Promote argues that the debt broker has caught up with the sales star in brokerage's pecking order, and it notes that sales aces like Spies now get prominent billing on financings. At Newmark he and Harmon work even more in lockstep with debt chiefs Jordy Roeschlaub and Jonathan Firestone, the full-service, 360-degree model that rival Bob Knakal has criticized as rife with conflicts. Commercial Observer's Power 100 has put Spies and Harmon at #17 two years running, each time one spot ahead of Eastdil's Gary Phillips and Will Silverman.
